What is Bamboo 'Chasen' Whisk?
Chasen is a tea whisk, one of the tea utensils used in the tea ceremony to make matcha (powdered green tea). Chasen has many prongs which enable you to whisk a bowl of smooth and frothy matcha into a tea bowl.
Traditionally made of bamboo, our whisks take advantage of bamboo’s natural flexibility to create fine, delicate foam.
While plastic alternatives exist, they lack this elasticity, making it harder to achieve a smooth, frothy matcha. That’s why we always recommend using a bamboo whisk.
To maintain its shape, store it on a whisk stand—heat and moisture can cause the tines to curl inward over time. For the same reason, it's not dishwasher-safe. Handle with care to keep your whisk in the best condition.
Tips for using Bamboo Tea Whisk
- When whisking matcha, be careful not to let the whisk’s tips touch the bowl (it could chip).
- When using the tea whisk, soak it in hot water to moisten it thoroughly. After use, rinse with water and dry well. The box is not for storage.
- After using the whisk, pinch the tips with your fingers and wash it well with water to remove any leftover matcha. If old matcha residue remains on the whisk, it can create a mouldy taste when preparing matcha. The same applies to matcha bowls—please ensure they are thoroughly cleaned before each use.
- If the tip of the tea whisk is curled, run it through the tea whisk with hot water to make it more flexible and easier to use.
- The tea whisk is a consumable item. If the whisk cracks, grows mould or the tip becomes worn out, it's time to buy a new one.
